Edmund K. Smith to Braxton Bragg, 5 October 1863
Head Qrs. Army of Kentucky
McCowan's Ferry
Oct. 5th. Midnight
To General Bragg Cmd'g &c—Harrodsburg, Ky.

Sir,
Yours of this morning just received. Gens. Heth & Churchill are now at Salvisa: Gen. Stevenson at Versailles: Col. Scott near, & this side of, Frankfort. Gen. Marshall with 2000 Infantry & 300 Cavalry, his whole force passed through Lexington at 10 o'c. this morning. He is ordered to return to Lexington unless he has crossed the river.

I inclose dispatches from Col. Scott. Does it not seem probable that the running of the trains he refers to is the movement of Gilbert's Corps referred to in the Louisville Democrat of the 3rd. inst.?

I have the honour to request that the convalescents be ordered up to Gen. Heth, & that Col. Taylor's Brigade be sent up to Gen. Stevenson, who is ordered to remain at Versailles.

I have directed Col. Scott to remain as near Frankfort as possible. /

I am, General, Very Respectfully,
Your Obdt. Servant,
E Kirby Smith
Maj. Gen.
