John C. Fremont to Nathaniel P. Banks, 12 June 1862
Head-Quarters, Mountain Department,
Mount Jackson, 12th June 8. pm 1862.

My dear General,
I have received your two notes of the 11th and learn with regret that you are on the march to Front Royal. I know nothing of the plan upon which the movements are made, but I think that it will prove disastrous to keep three small corps separated, so exposing them to be attacked in detail. I suppose some supports have gone to General Shields. Otherwise he may be attacked in his movement eastward to Richmond. After his defeat and information that he was ordered / to move on Richmond in cooperation with General McDowell I judged it expedient to retire to this place from Port Republic, where we parted from Jackson. We arrived here this forenoon. As you cannot come yourself will you order Sigel to come here? We should be strengthened without delay. Pray order him forward at once & oblige

Yours truly,
J. C. Fremont.

Genl Shields sent me word he had lost heavily (two Brigades nearly cut to pieces & 7 or 8 pieces of Artillery) & all his killed & wounded in hands of the enemy. So reports one of my messengers whom he authorized to give me verbal report.
