John C. Fremont to Nathaniel P. Banks, 10 June 1862
Head-Quarters, Mountain Department,
Harrisonburg 10th. June 1862.

            General,
I received to day your notes of the 6th & 8th and thank you warmly for your promise of aid in protecting my line and aiding me in supplies and re enforcements. I trust that you have already been able to push forward the latter. General Sigel writes that you might possibly send forward some of the better disciplined & supplied part of your troops. A chance might make us much need your extra strength.

We had a hard fought battle with Jackson on the 8th and pushed him next day in to the river where he carried the / Bridge at Port Republic, took from eight pieces of cannon and badly cut up two of his Brigades. When we reached the river the bridge was already in flames, and Jackson's force below us on the other side. For reasons which I will give you in my next I return to the place and hope to see your force here immediately. One hundred and twenty five will cover our killed in the Cross Keys battle and 500 the wounded. The buried and carried off part of his dead, but 200 were counted in one place field and many scattering.
Yours truly,
J. C. Fremont
