Hector Humphreys
Hector Humphreys was born on June 8, 1797, in Canton, Connecticut. He attended Westfield Academy in Massachusetts, and he graduated from Yale College in 1818. After graduation, he briefly studied law before reportedly “turn[ing] his attention to Theology.” In 1824, he was ordained as a deacon in the Episcopal Church. Soon afterward, he became a professor of ancient languages at Washington College (present-day Trinity College). He remained there until 1831, when he became president of St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. He also served as a professor of history and philosophy. According to an early biographer, he “was a highly accomplished scholar, and an able and effective preacher.” He died in Annapolis on January 25, 1857.
