Charles E. Morrison to John S. Cooke, 14 June 1861
South Groton June 14 -61

Friend John
Your last letter was duly received and read with much pleasure I am happy to hear that the noble sixth were presented with the Stars and Stripes; dont think it could be intrusted in better hands. I had supposed that each regiment was furnished with a U.S. Flag. Since my last letter Nourse Mason & Co have failed. O. Ames & Son "great Shovel manufactures" had a mortgage on their property and everything goes in this name or of B. F. Taft Agt. no change has taken place in the overseers of the different departments of the shop and evry thing goes on as usual except no tickets are given out. Tickets are no go in this town. go as hard as those issued by the City council of Charlestown where it takes 50 cts of them to buy a glass of whiskey. A. N. Fuller has about $3000 in their notes H A Woods some 1500 to 2000, and G. W. Stuart P. Harlow & Co and others in for a share of / the concern.

Business is very dull Tannery doing nothing or nearly nothing M W Woods have a contract of 50 goverment wagons to be finished this month 12 of them were sent to Boston last Tuesday, they also have a contract of 300 harnesses and have sent a part of those!! B. F. Taft agt. has a contract to build 40 goverment wagons of which 13 were sent last Tuesday the other are to be finished during this month.

Capt. Kings company are still quartered in Harmony Hall the Governor promised they should go into camp within ten days last Saturday.

General Schouler and other officers were at Shirley yesterday on an extra train to look at a piece of ground for one of the State encampments, it is said they thought the location a good one, and it is thought they will select the spot as one of the State encampments. it is on land this side of of Shirley Depot owned by the Shakers. There has been another addition to the home infant-ry since my last to you and although it is of the sex that dont usually go to war yet Tenner says / she attacks the Breastworks in gallant style.

I met Mrs Haynes at a sewing circle last week and gave her your letter to me to read she appeared to be nicely. I presume she keeps you and Charley posted on many things which transpire in this lively village

Dana says give my love to John and tell him I want to hear him sing. Give my best regards to Charley Eugene Capt Clark and all the other boys. I dont think of anything more to say now. please write again as soon as you can make it convenient and believe me

Your Friend
