Charles E. Morrison to John S. Cooke, 26 June 1861
South Groton June 26-1861

Friend John
It is a warm day here the thermometer near where I am writing in the freight office is 90. I dont feel much like writing but having a few spare minutes thought it better to try and say a few words to you. To begin with I will give you all the news I can think of. Nourse Mason & Co. have finished and sent off their lot of 40 Goverment wagons and have another contract for 265 more to be finished in forty days (a mighty good thing for this place)

M W Woods has sent a part of their wagons away and the rest go this week. they built 50 and have another contract for 35 more; they also have sent away 72 harnesses and have a contract to build 440 more and have fitted up the old brewery to do the work in, so for the next forty days we can say business will be good in Groton Junction if nowhere else.

Capt Kings company are still quartered in Harmony Hall but expect to / go into to camp the last of this week, but that story about their going into camp has got to be rather old here. they will probably be called out soon

Court this afternoon before His Honor Esq Clough: the case as far as I can learn is that a fellow belonging to company in or near Boston was in Litchfields with his brother who is a member of this company, and making something of a disturbance, been taking a little of course, when Litchfield sent for B. L. Howe, who took him out of the cellar and told him to leave but he swore he would not when Howe took him to the Lobby. the Brother (member of this Co) followed him into the Lobby and refused to come out saying he was going to stay in with his Brother, when Howe took hold of him to put him out of the Lobby when Stuart Parks and Davis Lieutenants of this Co and some of their men interfered to prevent him from touching the soilder. quite a crowd of citizens had gathered near and there was a prospect of a fight, but finally all hands cooled off. some of this company followed Howe back to the store hooting and giving groans &c, getting Howe a little riled I suppose / it seems Parks & Davis put their hands on him and so he has got out writs for them and they are to be tried this P.M. for interfering with an officer. dont think it will amount to much any way as long as no one was damaged.

Dana and myself may be found as usual at the Depot; suppose you give us a call say this P.M. at about five oclock and we will step into the Restorator and take a dish of strawberries & cream, which are plenty this season. Coln. Danl Needham has returned from the seat of war giving us accounts of how you Groton boys all are he also visited Fort Munroe he says you are very well situated at the Relay House and have a good chance to see all the troops which go to Washington. I suppose we shall soon have the pleasure of seeing the Groton boys rest assured you will one and all receive a cordial welcome I presume some will join the new Reg. after seeing the home friends.

Mrs. Hains has been quite sick with billious colic for some two weeks she is much better if not entirely well / I suppose you knew this but thought it was possible you were not informed of it and so would mention it.

I suppose you want me to keep you posted on the home infant-ry and would therefore say there has been one new recruit since my last by Mrs Bean assisted by the usual force in such cases this is of the sex which usually stay at home in time of war. write as often as you can make it convenient; respect to all the Boys and Love to you

Your Friend
C. E. Morrison

Dana wishes to be remembered to you
