(?) Thayer to John S. Cooke, 17 May 1861
Friday Eve May 17/61
My friend John S.C.
A few words from me may possibly be acceptable, therefore here you have them short handed "Hooray" for the 6th Regiment M.V.M. Co B. in particular, Old Groton forever, brave whole hearted boys, "Your Mothers know you are out", and thank God they have such Sons, who at a moments warning take leave of friends most dear for the defense of Our Flag Yes Boys, your hasty / step from home was a perfect Godsend for our "Uncle Abe". You are in clover, yes, and in the hearts of each and every one you left behind, and those of you who have been unfortunate, upon your return, can, I have no doubt, more readily find a "better half" to share the welcome of a brave Soldier We are with you every day, and hope to see you all soon. You have probably before this recd clothing for Capt Clark's command, should have sent it before but were advised to the contrary at Boston—a little apple Brandy also enclosed, from J. N. House. wish I could / ask you all in to Thomas & Jeremiah. Our Club are all well and send everlasting good wishes. Frost will be up next week to meet with us. Say to Clark that we don't suffer a person to say O against Co B. or the 6th Regiment, if so, down he goes. I continue to go to Boston every day, but business is dead as Sunday. last Saturday they say some 40 houses failed. every thing looks bad this way for the present. You have my best wishes for the future. I send this by Mrs Col Jones—excuse in haste from ever your friend
