Eugene A. Hinds Statement, undated
I became partially acquainted with James H Pollard during the latter part of the war. I was one of three who took a part in making him a reception on his return home to Jordanville at the close of the war. it was in the form of a surprise by the citizens of that little place we became intimate Friends we rode out together we slept together and I thus became acquainted with his disability of piles and varicose veins he told me that it was brought on from work and exposure while building the Dock at Hilton Head S. Carolina in the year 1862. His trade was carpenter but he seemed indisposed to do hand labor while living at Jordanville. He worked some at his trade in the vicinity and some at Wagon work in a shop in the village of Jordanville I saw him frequently and I am satisfied that his trouble was brought on while in the service of his country and certainly from any exposure between the time I was knowing to it and the date of his discharge
