William H. Durfee to Brother and Sister, 19 April 1864
Camp Stoneman Near Washton
April 19/64
Dear Brother & Sister
Perhaps you think I have forgot how to write but you must not scold much for since I came from home I have not had much time. we started from Providence last the 8th and reached New York the 9th and staid untill the 14th then started for washton arrived here the 16th expect to stay here some time there is nothing going on here and it is verry lonesome here doing nothing Lizzie and the children were well the last I heard from them I have had no letter since I left home but I suppose you have. we are / in camp at Giesboro Point near washington there is a large body of dismounted Cavalry about here the reason they are is because they cannot get horses or arms for them our Regt. numbers but three hundred but we expect to be recruited from home some time if ever my work is rather hard as we have no Officer but a captain and he is in Richmond (sick call is over) the largest half of our men is sick with [blank] since they come back which makes the duty verry hard for the well ones
But I guess this is enough for this time so I will close
Hope you will write soon give my love to the children and Sister Sue and tell her she owes me a letter and I want it
Write soon. Wm H Durfee
