John Allen Emerson
John Allen Emerson was born on November 25, 1840, in South Carolina to James Emerson. His father was a farmer who owned $12,000 of real estate and $15,000 of personal property by 1860. His mother probably died before 1850. He grew up and attended school in Anderson County, South Carolina.

He enlisted in the Confederate army on April 14, 1861, and he mustered in as a corporal in the 4th South Carolina Infantry. The regiment took part in the First Battle of Manassas. He eventually earned a promotion to sergeant, and he remained in the army until at least November 1861.

He returned to Anderson County after leaving the army, and he married Sallie S. Kay on December 13, 1866. They had at least two children: James, born around 1869; and Luther, born around 1873. He worked as a farmer in Anderson County, and by 1870, he owned $2,500 of real estate and $775 of personal property. He died in Belton, South Carolina, on September 11, 1907, “after an illness of some ten or twelve days.”
