Henry H. Mason to Frederick Starr, 29 March 1864
Lafayette Indiana
March 29th/64

Hon' Frederick Starr

            Dear Sir
I write you at the request of your son, Capt Geo' H Starr, whom I last saw on the 14th inst. At this time he was quite well. Through the influence of Bishop John's, of Richmond, I got away on the second boat taking paroled prisoners. Bishop Johns also used his influence in behalf of your son, and he came very near getting off with me. He had signed the parole, and was going out of the prison, when Ross, the prison clerk, recognized him as one of those escaping through the tunnel and recaptured. There being a strict order against any of those officers leaving at that time, he was taken from the number paroled and ordered back again. I should have written you / sooner but thought to have been in Rochester ere this. In about ten days I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you.

Very Respectfully Yours
H H Mason
Capt 2nd N.Y. Cav.
