Dear Sister I received your benevolen & favourable letter of the 1the & 2the in due time it was read with great pleasure I have no newes to communicate to you that will interres you only that I am well hopeing you may receive this short epistle enjoying health & pleasure we are in four miles of Atlanta the yankees are fronting our line of battle but have not advanced any for several days they know that General Johnston will not retreat any farther & they are come to a halt when they try to advance on Atlanta the bloodest battle of the war will take place most of the citizens have left the city the soldiers are in good spirits & we all think that Johnston will hold Atlanta Gen Bragg arrived hur yesterday from Richmond

You spoke somthing about the apples geting ripe it would be a great pleasure to me if I could spend one weak at home to get some fruit & vegetables though I would be satisfyed if I could get a fiew onions to eat with my bacon but alas I will have to do the best I can during the war I should be satisfyed that I am living I am in hops that Charles Horton wond is slight when you get the correct newes for I would be sorry to heare of his deth let me heare from John & Henry Knight also from the 6the 8the & 26the Regiments I got a mess of Irish potatoes the other day which pleased me the best of any thing that I have met up with in several days Onions are seling at one dollar a peas and they are very scarce it is most imposible to get any vegetables about the army I must close answer in hast fail not give me all the newes as all you write to me interrest me
