Camp Scott. Staten Island,
New York July 22nd 1861
Dear Sister.
I embrace the opportunity of droping you a few lines before we go. Our marching have come. we were to leave today but could not get ready. the wagons are here for our tents, baggage &c. the steam ship is all ready for us any moment. great excitement prevails in camp, and in N York City in consequence of the battles at Bulls Creek and Manassas Junction. Capt Brunn is officer of the day, to day. I am on guard at the guard house, which contains about a dozen prisoners, three of whom are deserters brought in today. sixteen of our men in one squad, and 16 in another, are out scouting, bringing home all straglers, of whom there is not a few, a double picket guard surrounds the Rigament, no one allowd to pass in or out with or without a pass, not commissiond officers even, excepting at the Officer of the days tent. Yesterday afternoon our whole Co were orderd out, with three rounds of cartradge, to quell a riot, by some of the NY fire zouaves, at Clifton, two miles from camp, to which place we proceeded at a double quick. the fuss was over when we got there, we arrested some sixty of them, brought them up to the 5th Regiment without difficulty. My love to Mother and all the rest.
Your Affectionate Brother.
