Samuel W. Croft to Sarah McKelvey, 30 September 1861
Camp McClellan, Sept 30th/61

Dear Sister.
In camp once more. I recieved your last yesterday evening. Capt Brunn is here, and brought with him eight men, and has 90 more comeing. I wrote to Cousin Esther. I will refer you to her for particulars, so please excuse a short letter this time. Yesterday we marched 16 miles from 1 P.M. to 7 P.M. one hour of that time we made 6 miles on a double quick. Yesterday Munsons hill and Fairfax C.H. were taken the enemy retreated from Munsons hill without fireing a gun. The 3rd Regt of our Brigade go into Virginia Today. We are getting new uniforms, shoes, canteens & haversacks, after which I expect we will pay Old Virginia a visit also. I am well and sanguine of speedy success to our cause. Genl McClellan says / that we have lost our last battle. all I feel uneasy about is England & france. for the sake of the country I hope they will stay at home, but if they do come they will get whiped, just so sure as they have to cross water to get here. My love to Mother and yourself & all the rest. My respects to Mc and Kiss that Darling Harry of yours often for me. Write soon, all letters are forwarded to us from Washington.
