Samuel W. Croft to Sarah McKelvey, 4 January 1862
First Regiment, Excelsior Brigade,
Col. Dwight, Commanding.
Camp Farnham, Jan 4th 1862

Dear Sister.
Your's of Dec 30th, I recieved yesterday evening. I have little to write about, therefore you must excuse a short letter. The new year has fairly began, and I hope before it rolls away peace and quiet will take the place of enmity and war. The surrender of Mason and Slidell dose not appear to quiet the British / lion, who would not have dared to show his teeth, had we not been quarreling among ourselves, his snarling will get him into no particular difficulty. if he makes a spring, his paw may get into a trap. General Scott brings news of staunch friendship for the US on the part of France. I recieved a letter from Ben, he seems very indignant at the English, he is well and at work. There was an accident happend to Harrys picture at Chambers' while I was there, by some mishap it was half rubed out. New Years day was warm dry and pleasant. last night it rained and snowed, and then froze. this morning the ground was a sheet of ice. through the day it snowed a little. this evening it feels and look like winter. It is useless to think of my getting a furlough, but one of our Co (John Lea) / got a furlough, and he had influence at head quarters, in shape of an uncle. Do not put yourself to any trouble to send things to me, dainties would be a great treat, to be sure, but I will think just as much of you, if you dont send any, as I will if you do. Pete Rotharmel and Charly Bowen were in the Dranesville fight. Pete R— over coat coller was pierced with a musket ball, but a miss is as good as a mile. My love to Mother yourself, Mc & all, tell Sissie I got her kiss and return one for it, also one for Harry.

Your Affectionate Sister.
