Ephraim W. McKelvey to Sarah McKelvey, 1 January 1857
Sang Hollow Jany 1st 1857
Dear Sarah
I am just able after a severe attack of erysipelas to sit up long enough to address you a few lines I recd your last on the day after I took sick and was not able to read it untill the next day and oh Sarah how thankfull I feel to God that I am this day able to write these lines Sarah you need not think for one moment that I ever intend to treat you with neglect, how happily two weeks ago I anticipated my visit to your home and there convince you how well I deserved your love and confidence but I was stricken down God saw [?] to chastise me with affliction if we never see each other again I hope we may meet in that place where there are no sorrows.
The Dr says I am in a fair way recovering but it will take some time to cure my foot and ankle. He had to lance it Sunday and I am pretty free of pain but feel very weak. I trust you are enjoying good health and spirits and if I had you here / to sit with me how short the time would be. I had written you on 19th answering your questions and think it strange you had not got it before you wrote I mailed it to Pittsburgh I will send this to Duquesne I trust in a few days I will be able to write you more satisfactory letters I will come to a close by wishing you heapy new year and may heaven Bless you with its choicest Blessings
Yours Truely
E W McKelvey
