Head Qurs. 1st Army Nor Va
July 18th 1864
Special Orders No 167

II         The practice of permitting communication between our pickets & skirmishers and those of the enemy, is highly injurious to the service & subversive of discipline. It is enjoined upon all Officers to prohibit it strictly.

The enemy must be kept within his lines, & when any of his men attempt to approach ours, except under a regularly authorized flag of truce, or show themselves within range, they will in all cases be fired upon and driven back.

No intercourse or conversation with the enemy shall be allowed, & no officer or man will be permitted to go outside of our picket lines except by authority of the Corps Comdr or officer commanding detached troops.

Should a flag of truce be sent by the enemy, it will not be received until the fact has been reported to the Corps Commander or Officer Comdg detached troops, who will designate the person by whom it shall be met.

The enforcement of this order is enjoined upon the Corps and other Commanding Officers.
