Franklin Ashley to Celesta A. Ewing, 8 March 1861
Whitley Co Ind March the 8/61
Dear Celesta it is with pleasure that I address you these fiew lines I have not altogether forgotten you yet but have neglected writing to you until now I have been very lonesom some of the time since I left home I arrived safe at Columbia found the folks all well I helped to stir off sugar last week and took my pay in what sugar I could eat it paid big to. I have been thinking of the fiew eavenings that we have spent together and I hope that we may spend more the same way I suppose that the war path is all wright yet
I saw James and George shecler last week George talks of coming home with me when I come if he gets the horses and wagon he is talking of if he does we will come through by land I think from the appearance of George that he is sick but I can hardley tell what kind of sickness it is but from all that I can hear it is a common thing for boys especily for those that have land some folks call it a farm I'll tell you the rest when I come back it has been so muddy that it was most impossable to get around I can hardley tell when I shal return probaly in about 3 weeks as I got into a speculation I have got that little box that you gave me and one more / that looks very nise on the out side. I have a verry bad cold and feel under the necessity of closing I should like to hear from you very much if you wrigte direct to Columbia as I shal be there a part of the time so Good By
I remain your ever true friend
Yours most respectfully
F Ashley
