Camped behind the Works

Dear Let
Having time and thinking perhaps you would like to hear from Dixe by this time I will write you a fiew lines well Let we have not taken Atlanta yet but can shell it from all points and some 2 or 3 batteries are amusing themselves throwing shells in the town also have had 2 heavy fights with the rebs our Devision the 2ond of the 4 Corps and Hookers Corps were engaged the rebs advanced and charged on our men came on them by surprise came on us before our lines were formed our devision had but just crosed Peach tree creek and 2 of Hookers / Devisions were a cross and the other crossing when the charge was made the left of our Devision was driven back but soon formed and drove the enemy back and held the ground and the right Devision of Hookers Corps was also drivin back but was reenforcd by the Devision that was crossing and drove the rebs back the loss on our side was light was 8 kiled and 45 wounded in the 2 Devision of 4rth cannot tell the loss of Hookers corps the rebs loss in kiled will exceed 800 there was 540 buried and near 200 hundred that are laying yet unburied the rebs took off quite a number during the night but we have to mourn the loss of our best men kild that was Marion Trago he was kiled instantly this hapend on the 20 of July the rebs left on the night of the 21 fell back too miles / where they have strong works we advance on the morning to within a short distance of their works and fortified while this was going on McPherson had a heavy fight with them on the left they drove him at first but he got the better of them soon and drove them back but have not heard the official report as yet it was reported that Gen McPherson was kiled but is contradicted since well Dear Wife I am alive and well and hope I shall remain so but cannot tell how that will be Dear Wife I hope this may find you enjoying better health than at former times I hope soon to hear from you I received one on the 18 but have answrd it Well let I hope this war will soon be over and all be permitted to return to their homes / we have the the nuse of an other draft to take place soon for 500000 more men I hope they will get them and soon to if we had a larger army here we could annihilate them but will not dwell on that part of the story Let you may expect to hear of some lively times here soon but I must close this scribling give my best wishes to all I remain your
