Franklin Ashley to Sarah Ewing, 15 April 1863
Murfreesboro Tenn
April the 15 63
Mrs S Ewing Most dear and effectionate friend I take pleasure in writing these fiew lines in answer to yours of the 9 was glad to hear from you but am sorry it is under such circumstances would to God they were different if it had been about me I would not care about it but such is not but I do not want you to entertain the idea that I believe those reports I would not have you think so by no means I was sorry that I ever wrote any thing about it when to late but it may make a different impression on our minds than it would if I had said nothing but for all such reports my love for her is the same and I would not have her think otherwise but I am sorry that she lets it trouble her it would / be a great satisfaction to me to get a furlough and come home it may be so that I can come home this summer but do not build up hopes on that but if there is an opportunity I intend to improve it it is not because I did not want to see her and the rest of the folks there was no chance to get a furlough and I will not desert I would not dishonor my lover and friends at home but when I enlisted I did not think that the war would last as long as it has but still it goes on and going on the second year but I think it looks more like closing than it ever has but it is hard to tell much about it but I cannot express my feelings on this subject but my sympathy is for her and hope she will not let it trouble her anymore for it will not help the case but I know that it is natural but rest rest easy on my part and one thing more / I do not want her to deprive herself of society and pleasure of this world not in the least but she knows what suits her best but I want her to enjoy herself the best she can untill this cursed war is crushed and rebeldom has become extinct and then may future hopes and joys be fulfild and what they are you can judge for your self but it seams strang that some folks have nothing els to do but lie and carry false reports about other folks far superior to themselves but now will leave the subject hoping that things will be all right but if I could be there a short time I know it would my health is good and has been for some time but I had a hard time in the winter for about 2 months but I got over it and my health is better than it was last summer it is healthy here the weather / is very nice here things are quiet the work is going on briskly on the fortifications with this will close and write to Let
yours with respects from an effectionate friend my best wishes to all
