Dear Father
Wallace, our Adjt is writing a line to a [torn] in N.Y. and I intend to have him enclose this [torn] letter. I have nothing new to relate having [torn] last Sunday. I am sitting in the [torn] hour being 9 o'clock P.M. and beneath [torn] of a tent I have got put up. Every now & [torn] reports of musquetry &c. break the stillness. Constant artillery practice goes on between our lines of pickets &c, each side trying to prevent the other from throwing up dirt. Some think it will be a month before we get Richmond, others sooner my idea is, that a desperate battle will be fought before 3 weeks, and the thing decided. I hope so, for I live now in a lake of mud, the roads in places as bad as those we travelled at the Capital last February. You would laugh to see us. I enjoy the life amazingly but would like to move on.

Your's Aff.
Fred.

If you can & think it expedient, I [torn] you would send me a box, of very [torn] cigars and a lb of best Turkish tobacco [torn] such as comes in half bladders tied together. Let Frank get it for me. Give my love to all. Good night

Your's
Fred
