Dear Father—
Your letter, with one from Charley & Wallace also, boots, shoulder straps &c are just at hand. I inclose certificates of Quarters signed—voucher for postage—and a singular document that will be potent to you, as you understand the preliminary circumstances &c attending it. It seems Birney's action was interested. I should say he was in collusion with Col. Hayman of the 37th N.Y. and for a consideration agreed with Hayman to get our Reg'm't disbanded and the men put into his command. My surmises are warranted I think by his treatment of me &c, esteeming me evidently the one most necessary to get rid of to accomplish his purpose. He is foiled completely I imagine, and now his whole character and the cause of my troubles are exposed. Put the document I send away.
I am glad to hear from Charley. Tell him to come and see me. No pass is needed. He goes to Alexandria (if then any trouble see Frank Lord Sup't'd't of the Road) and takes the cars to Warrenton, then the first Gov'm't wagon will bring him here, four miles off. He needs no baggage nor money, I will / do what I can for him.
He can see if he likes the life before jumping into it—
In haste
Your's Aff.
Fred.
I also inclose a letter to Gov. Morgan and as it expresses my present views about the Reg'm't, I want you to read it first, and then forward it to Albany—you must read the endorsements upon my letter to Birney in their regular order, and Berry's statement & my own in their's. Did you ever see or read of such "Tape Business". Thanks for the postage stamps.
