John A. Gage to Brother, 5 January 1862
Camp Terry January 5th 1862
 
Dear Brother I received your kind letter last night and was quite glad to here from you for I was very anxious to here from home all of the boys are well with the exception of Elisha he is sick has ben quite low he is not able at this time to stand alone but is mending sloely Kiner Rector is nurseing him he has ben carryed to Nashville the regiment is injoying very good health at this time Dick and Dr Royston has ben discharged on account of there health we have had a fight we were victorious we killed 75 that is General Hinemanes estimation the general that was in charge of our regiment at the time the fight taken place we also taken 12 prisoners our loss was 4 killed including our cournal killed of our Companey Bell and Loftin & had 8 wounded in all of which one of our Companey has died Lee Giles is his / name our enimy had 9 to our one the Texas rangers mowed them down before them Gen Hineman said he never witness sutch a dareing charge before in his life they had all the advantage of us we were cross fired on after we cleared the field we fell back on the account of there having superior numbers you stated in your letter that you wished to know about our amunition we are well suplied theare is 2 or 3 powder milles in Tenisee and a great quantity of caps manufactured at nashville I and John Rector were the only ones from [?] in the fight the rest of the boys were sick at the time the fight taken place on the 17th of December it lasted about one hour you never have said any thing about Isaac and George I would like very well to know whether they belong to any company or not you never say any thing about them in your letters as for clothing I have put in a reckusition one close bodyed coat 1 pr pants pr boots I guess they will be furnished soon / as for money we will be payed off soon I will come to a close as it is geting late you must wright often
