Henry Le Roy was born on January 17, 1824, in New York, to Jacob and Helen Le Roy. He was baptized on March 15, 1824. The family lived in Red Hook, New York, and by 1850, his father owned $30,000 of real estate. He married Amelia Lewis on September 9, 1851, and they had at least two children: Jacob, born on September 19, 1852; and Herman, born on June 29, 1860. They lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he described himself as a “gentleman.” By 1860, he owned $40,000 of real estate and $3,000 of personal property. He employed at least three domestic servants.
He joined the Union army during the war, and he served as a captain and assistant adjutant general. He died of chronic diarrhea in Philadelphia on March 5, 1865.
