Head Quarters 5^th Army Corps—Oct. 31^st 1862

 

Sir.

            Sergt. Anthony G. Graves of Company "F" 44^th Regt N.Y.Vols. was enlisted at Albany N.Y. Sept. 4^th 1861, and was appointed Sergeant Oct. 3^rd of same year. Since his first enlistment his deportment as a man and soldier has been such as to entitle him to the highest praise. He has shown all the qualities which commend a man for advancement. Brave, steady, courteous & gentlemanly, with few if any superiors as a drill-master, severely wounded at Hanover, and taken prisoner at the "second battle of Bull Run"; his promotion would not only give the service an excellent officer, but be worthily bestowed as a reward of merit.

 

I take great pleasure in recommending him, because I consider him eminently qualified to make, if commissioned, one of the best Lieutenants in the volunteer service.
