Edmund Pendleton Turner
Edmund Pendleton Turner was born around 1835 in New Kent County, Virginia. His father was a Baptist minister who owned $5,000 of real estate by 1850. He grew up and attended school in New Kent County, and he enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1855. He graduated in 1858 before enrolling at Harvard Law School.
 
He enlisted in the Confederate army on June 28, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company F of the 3rd Virginia Cavalry. In October 1861, Confederate officials detailed him to work as a clerk for General John B. Magruder. He remained in the Confederate army until at least March 1862.
 
He settled in Houston, Texas, after leaving the army, and he earned a living as a lawyer. He married Lucy Baker on June 14, 1869, and their daughter Daisy was born around 1870. His wife died on June 2, 1873, and he married Mary A. Cowen on December 19, 1874. Their son Edmund was born around 1886. He suffered a “severe stroke of paralysis” around 1906, and he died in Sewanee, Tennessee, on July 31, 1907.
