William Bender Wilson was born on April 5, 1839, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Thomas L. Wilson. He worked as a “telegrapher and railroad man” during the Civil War. He married Sarah A. Urich around 1866, and they had at least five children: Thomas, born around 1873; Donald, born around 1875; Francis, born around 1877; Margaretta, born around 1879; and Mary, born around 1884. They lived in Harrisburg, and he employed two domestic servants. He moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the late 1800s. In 1889, he published A Glimpse of the United States Military Telegraph Corps and of Abraham Lincoln. He also served as president of the Society of the United States Military Telegraph Corps. He died of “fatty degeneration of [the] heart” in Philadelphia on February 27, 1919.
