Mr A. J. Mattison
Sir I have omited writing concerning the death of your nephew A. J. Spencer he was wounded on the field of battle on the 15th of May he was wounded on the 14th of May and died at 3 P.M. on the 15th on the 16th I help inter his body. he had as good a burrial as any soldier receives. I done all for him that could be done for any one that was as bad as he was his wound was fatal he could have no relief. the ball passed diagonally acrost his stomache entering his body about one inch above his right hip bone. his abdomens was badly severed. he suffered with excruciating pain. by his request I took all articles that he had in his pocket to take care of them. I found a few letters a / Masonic cros a likeness with two persons in a pocket knife, and 30 cts worth of post stamps. I intended to send them to you or his mother if it was desired. on the night of the 6th of June I had all of his articles together with many trikets and between one and two hundred dollars of accounts of my own stolen from me. I felt verry much grieved about loosing what belong to Alberto as I did about my own. Alberto had nothing of any value only the cross, that I know not its value.
with respect I remain yours truly
