Charles D. Garlick to Henry Garlick and Clarissa C. Garlick, 3 July 1862
Morehead City July 3rd /62

My Dear parents
Perhaps you wonder why I date this letter or these lines at Morehead City I will try to tell you we are on the move We left our camp at Newbern yesterday about 11 oclock came to Morehead on the cars by the way it is the first ride we have had on the cars since we came from Phila to Perrysville last winter

We are to take the transport here for some place I can tell you where better after I have been there

I am well and as I had a few moments this morning I would scribble you a few lines for I do not know when I shall have a chance again We had quite a rain storm here last night it is still cloudy this morning It looks somewhat natural here especily bayous banks all except the flag on the old fort which instead of being that hated of all flags the Palmetto is the glorious Stars and stripes Some think that we are going to pay fort Caswell a visit similar to that we payed Fort Macon  Others that we are going to join General Hunter before Fort Sumpter I hope it is the latter place for I would like to see the stars and stripes waving over that old fort once more but go where we will we are determined to go with a will and a purpose to accomplish whatever we undertake

I will close hopeing that you will excuse this hastily scribbled sheet and expect better nex time

I remain as ever your
Affectionate son
Charles D. Garlick

P. S. Direct as before to Newbern give my respects to all /

PS. Tell Father that we are going some where to make the rebbles
