Charles A. Moore was born around 1828 in New York City, New York. He married Josephine Adams on November 18, 1858, and they had at least four children: Walter, born around 1859; Henry, born around 1865; Annie, born around 1868; and Irma, born around 1876. He operated an embroidery store in New York City, and by 1860, he owned $8,000 of real estate and $10,000 of personal property.
In August 1861, he received a commission as a captain in Company G of the 47th New York Infantry. The regiment took part in the siege of Charleston, the Battle of Olustee, the Bermuda Hundred campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He served as acting colonel at Petersburg, and he reportedly received “several medals…for distinguished service.” He mustered out on September 10, 1864.
He returned to New York City after leaving the army. He spent fourteen years serving in the Volunteer Fire Department. He also worked for a storage warehouse company. He died in New York City on October 26, 1918.
