Dear brother
                        I received a letter from you yesterday stating that you would like to hear from me wal I enjoy my self as well as can be expected in a rebel country wal herman how do you get a long hoeing potatoes some peces of corn down here is higher than my head we have new potatoes down / black beries I picked in half an hour ner half bushel and there is any quanity of plumbs here wal herman how does eddie get a long with his gunn how does watch and henry get a long has he kild him yet if he has he had never better see me a gain tell par that he must a good boy of you so that you can work at joirning with me when I come back from the war so that we can build him a new house what do you think of that / herman dont you think that we can you must see to my tools and not let them rust tell farther to use them when he wants to and not lend them you spoke a bout Jack I have him now the black boy is gone a way and when I come home there will be plenty of them to get then so I wont be troubild with him now give my love to uncle Lyman and Caroline and all of the folks and kiss eddy for me write soon
