My Dear Parrents
I now take my pen in hand to answer your kind and welcom letter that I received last night and how pleased I was to hear from you and to hear that you was all well, as I set here a thinking a bout home and the plesent times that we use to enjoy in the old farm house and sit by the fire side and hear stories and have a crack of walnuts and a glass of good cider O how plesent it was want it. wal I hope the time will / soon come when we shall meet a gain and this war ended without the shedding of anny more blood it aint a verry thing to stand before the enemy and fire at each other but we dont think anny thing a bout it after we have fired 2 or 3 times. I have heard from henry once and then he said that his feet was sore and could not drill he said that he had not done anny duty for 5 weeks but was getting better he said that he was sorry that he did not enlist in our regiment I should of liked to had him verry mutch the weather is verry cool down hear I soppose thanksgiving will be over before / you get this letter but I soppose you will think of me and eat a lot of tirkey and pudding for me I think that I am on the gain I gain I weigh 160 pounds, the other day how I should like to see Eddie I should think he was a cunning little fellow kiss Eddie for me tell Herman Jack is a big fellow Erasmus Oriatt is the disagreeableist man that I ever saw he dont like it because he want permited he has bin traing to get his discharg but cant make it out he has bin plaing sick so mutch that the doctor has found him out and told him to go and drill and not play sick enny more
no more to write this time fred sends his love to you all give my love to Aunt and uncle and James and family and shear a good part your selfs you said that you was a going to send me a box it would be verry acceptable indeed yours truly from your son Miles L Smith write soon I am well
