Diary 1862
Thursday Dec 5th 1861
I left home this morning to regain my regiment having been at there on account of bad health I left with a heavy sorrowing heart not knowing when I shall return but hoping for the best
I missed the train this morning and will have to wait untill evening
Fri Dec 6th
I left Piqua yesterday evening arived at cincinnatti at 9 put up at the Galt house. Went to Pikes appery Got up this morning and had to hunt the quartermaster found him and got a pass found the boat and got my / lugage aboard will not leave untill evening spent the day in sight seeing
Saturday Dec 7th
We started last night and found ourselves this morning about forty miles up the river going verry slow. Our Col is aboard he is as lively as ever and chatting with the privates as if he was one of them
Sunday Dec 8th
We are still going along slowly This evening we are at Grizandotto unloading some hay The town presents a melancoly appearance having been nearly all burned by our men / about four weeks ago there is some union men in it I took dinner with one of them We will not get started before dark I have just learned that our regt is at Pt. Pleasant
Monday Dec 9
We arived at Pt Pleast at 3 AM went out to camp at daylight found the bags all well. We are encamped in a meadow on the banks of the Ohio it is a beautiful place

This morning we mov ed into town and took quarters in a church verry comfortably situated

Slept on the boat last night This morning got on a light draught boat (Victor No 2) and cape up to lamp creeck Got off the boat and sholdered our loads and walked to Gaudy changed our muskets for Springsfield rifles walked down to the falls and put up for the night.
Fayetteville May 22
Left the falls early walked twelve miles over a miserable road / We went up one hill seven miles long Co D is in this place the citizens have deserted the town
In the Woods May 23
Walked eighteen miles to day verry hilly country

Walked seven miles this morning arived at this place at nine a clock raining found the regt all well
Raleigh May 25th
Frost last night have to go to work on the hospital have seventy bunks to make for men that were wounded at Princeton

marched two miles this morning to Wyoming CH small place surounded by mountains stopped my ____ walked back to Stewarts / and took dinner he is a good union man has a large peach orchard and a good farm marched on untill sundown and camped on second farm the propriates had just killed a deer he ran off when he saw us coming we had the deer for supper
June 13th
Started this morning at day light walked foor miles before breakfast got back over guzandatte mountain before dinner marched to our first camping ground and took supper marched six miles after supper and put up for the night in a barn

Walked six miles this morning to camp we made good time on this scout the round tripp is eighty miles we made it in four days
July __
Started for Wyoming for cattle marched seventeen miles and stoped for the night
July 21
Marched to Stewarts to day by the midle of the afternoon stayed all night
July 22
Walked over to books (four miles) and sent the cavalry after the cattle they came / in at night with out them. I had a good deal of fun to day at a farm house where there was a girl
July 23
Started some herd eaters after the cattle this morning I and an other person had some fun to days with some girls In the evening we walked six miles
July 24
We got the cattle this morning and started for camp marched eighteen miles

Started this morning and got to camp by noon (fourteen miles) with sixty head of cattle
July 26
Spent the day in fixing up fire ____ of our regt left this evening for Gauley they are expecting an attact n that place

This morning thirty five of our men ___ with the rest was ordered to go to some ferry on New river for guards We packed up and walked to Fayetvill / a distance of twenty five miles we had all our traps with us

We stayed here all night and have orders to stay here we are not needed at that Ferry
Started for Gauley to day with our baggage (a squad of us was left back) went six miles stopped got peaches at nigers

Crossed the Potomac at daylight at Harpers Ferry Patspied river beautiful stream Grace Factory Girls verry Patriotic Washington DC arived 12th ________ painted in the city private buildings small Public building grand cars ________ through the Potomac bridge detained several hours walked to Alexandria seven miles / good place verry hard steam and railing vessels in abundance

Left this morning on cars at daylight met slaves leaving by hundred Bull run commanding ahead ____ Ferry brigade engaged with the enemy enemy drives them back 11th and 12th ____ covering ______ retreat 12th surrounded 11th charged on the enemy and relieved the 12th we fell back to Fairfax station one of our men wounded Corp Day

Started on our retreat at 11 last night marched all night and to until 10 AM when we arived at Alexandria / verry tired twenty five miles

Marched eight miles out from this place and encamped in a beautiful place Soldiers and munitions of was in evry direction big guns strong fortifications

Left Falls Church this morning came through Georgetown and Washington and to this place two miles east of the city

Marched eight miles to day towards Harpers Ferry encamped on a farm about a mile from the road went a foraging out got a haversack full of peaches

Started at 4 PM and marched twelve miles

Started at four PM and marched ten miles good country Brookville
Sept 10th
Marched all day encamped at Ridgeville small village the ____ was here this morning

Left R this morning passed through New Market 6 miles arived in sight of Frederick City at 4 PM our troops in line of battle our regt in rear cannon _____ ahead some infantry firing cavalry and artilery entered town driven back on two pieces captured our regt charged in and retook them and cleaned Lieut Rehuffs horse shot from under him pretty badly brised nice town citizens glad to see us gave us all we could eat and drink Col M are taken prisoner

The enemy are ahead in the mountains our artilery is poping it into them marched six miles enemy three miles ahead in another parition encamped at Middletown
Sept 14
Left our knapsacks and started out for the fight we got into the enemy at 10 AM and had some pretty warm work for a while we drove them back and camped on the battle ground

I went over the battle ground this morning it is an awful sight There was five hundred of the ___ camp dead left on the field / we marched six miles to day and camped with McClellan army
Sept 16th
The fight comenced this morning with artilery grand sight valleys of fifty pieces of artilery most loaded with shell moved up to the left behind a hill shell bursting over us costantly
Sept 17th
Shelling again this morning we advanced and got into clase quarters our Lieut Col Coleman killed crossed antetum creek and charged on the enemy drove them back layt on our arms all night

Lay and wached each other today our division was relieved this evening we went back and got something to eat
Sept 19th
Marched four miles to day the enemy left last night and are now acress the potomac and out of Maryland so I suppose we will get to rest for a while
Oct 8th
Marched eighteen miles today from Antietam to Hagerstown awful hot and dustly Passed the center of the great Battle ground it is like an imence grave yard Trees to fields by shot and shell

Passed through HT this morning verry nice place Clear Spring twelve mi from H beautiful place small camped in the woods sixteen miles to day

Marched fifteen miles to Hancock waded the Potomac to H station in VA and are now waiting for the train that I suppose will take us to Western VA Had an alarm today wich detained us two hours it turned out to be a str_glers scare
