[January 1]
The first day of the year where will I be next New year I hope I wont be soldiering
Had a big dinner to day of my own getting up it consisted of a roast Goose mashed potatoes green apple pies bread butter and molasses

Spelling 1 difficulty    2 transgressions
 
[January 23]
Went and to Bails to Day and got some butter fine family
 
[January 24]
Left Summersville this morning for a marched fifteen miles passed Crofs Lanes were Col Tylers 7th Rgt was so badly and up by the Rebs in 1861 camped on Peters creeck Rain in the night
 
[January 25]
Marched thirteen miles to day over an awful road pour country all mountains camp on twenty mile creeck
 
[January 26]
Started this morning before daylight passed Gauley bridge went down the Kanawha to Laup Creeck got aboard Batteaux and went down to Connelton got aboard a steam boat and went down to Charlston lay up for the night

Started early this morning stopped at Pt Pleasant an hour met some of my friends at Gallipolis we met a fleet of ten boats at sundown we started down the Ohio River went in four miles and lay up for the night

Moving again this morning arived at Cincinnatti in the evening stopped for coal lay up for the night a few miles below cold air

Arived at Lewisville landed at an island to keep the Boys from getting ashore
 
[January 30]
On Guard to day run down over the falls of the Ohio stopped at Portland

We were paid of last night I was on guard this morning I left the boat with the intention of deserting went down the River four miles and crossed over to Indiana walked fifteen miles to Lanesville bought a suit of citizens clothes had some fun

Walked through Edwardsville Maneville Galena Greenville to a RR station called Pekin a distance of thirty miles twenty-three miles from New Albany
 
[February 2]
Got on the cars at ten o clock this morning went to Green Castle juction change of cars and run into Indianapolis at eight o clock put up Littles Hotel good house
 
[February 3]
Left on the 1.30 train arived in Union City at ‘nine o clock Growing town
 
[February 4]
Got on the train this morning at two one o clock and arived in Houston station at three walked home and surprised the folks didnt get to sleep a wink last night slept five hours to day
 
[February 13]
Left home this morning after a very pleasant visit of nine days met ten Boys of our Regt in Dayton arived in Cincinnatti got transportation to Lewisville on the mail pad on deck with a gang of negroes had a golly time

Arived in Louisville this morning before daylight put up at the Preston house hunted up the propper officers and got transportation to Nashville Repasted at Barracks Not to spend the night
 
[February 15]
Left Louisville this morning at eight o clock on the cars passed over some splendid farm land passed the 50th Regt Arived in Nashville at dark fine city
 
[February 16]
Left the Barracks where we staid last night and walked out to the Regt a distance of three miles Found the Boys all well reported to the Captan and was no put under arrest as I expected to be good camping ground

Got a ____ and ____ today and cleaned them up

I received an order to day reducing me to the rank

Struck tents this morning walked to Nashville got aboard steamboats Orient No signs of moving One year ago we celebrated this day at Point Pleasant Va and was having good times but the tables are turned

Beautiful day we are still at the wharfs of Nashville

Started up the Cumberland today went twenty five miles and lay up for the night beautiful scenery all along the river beautiful day

They had a beg scare on last night at Head Quarters we had to lay on our arms all night I am on pickett today

The Division crossed the River to day I don’t know wahat in the reason for the move

Heavy commanading heard town the River Small pox has made its appearance in several Regts in our Division

A Fleet came up the River yesterday evening they were fired on a few miles below here the Gun boat returned the compliment nobody hurt on our side Our Col and some of our men came up on the fleet

We changed our old guns today for new Springfield Rifles the Boys are all pleased with the change

We are ordered to prepare three days rations by 4 PM for a scout Raining

Started out last night went out six miles and lay alond the fence untill daylight and then went into Rame but found nothing went two miles farther and captured eight wagons and a few Rebs returned with thirty prisoners and forty horses lost but one man prisoner

The Regts came in this morning had a skirmish three of our men wounded Rebs to heavy for them

Our Regt crossed the River and went out into the Country three miles and brought in one of our men that was wounded the last time we were out here

The 11th and 9th and a detachment of Stokes Cavelry crosed the River this evening for a scout Marched out to Alexandria a distance of fourteen miles arived at 12 a clock met a heavy force of our met from Murfreesboro

Lay at Alexandria all day the mounted men scoured the country

Marched back to Carthage to day didn’t get to fire a gun while on the trip

Moved on about 2 miles layed untill morning  Heard report that Grant had whipped Lee Light cannonading was both right and left light skirmishing in front

One or two pretty heavy volleys about 8 AM Moved out and took position in second line lay untill evening we went to work on Bridge and worked all night

Raining Eastern news published Artilery duel at Dalton Gap rained all night verry disagreable

Still raining lay in camp all day Artilery fireing at Gap orders to move at 4 AM tomorrow

12th 1864
Moved to the right at 6 AM passed parts of the 15th 116th 20th Corps passed through Snake Creek Gap and camped marched 15 mils pleasant day

May 13th 1864
Marched out and formed in line of Battle skirmishing in front lay in line all night heard Enemy Fortifyting saw 23 corps

May 14th 1864
Reformed line advanced at 8 ½ AM Capt Tenerboughs our Regt in reaer line about 2 PM whole line advanced but were repulsed We had four lines of Battle the first lines suffered severly reformed our line and lay all night

15th 1864
Fireing began at daylight heavy skirmishing heavy along our entire front our corps moved about a mile to the right lay in line all day no heavy fighting the Rebs made an assault on us at 11 ½ PM but were repulsed
 
[May 20]
May 16th Woke up this morning and found the Rebs had retreated moved at 12 M arived at Resaco at 2 PM cars in as soon as we were seen a good many prisoners and eight pieces of captured Artilery

Raining Troops mooving to the front our Regt left to hold this place went into camp on the bank of the Claustenaulo River fixed up pretty well by night

Bridge over River completed and trains crossing Duty verry heavy no news from the front a good many prisoners comeing in

May 21st 1864
50th OV I cam in this evening saw Billy he staid with me all night went over to their camp and seen all the Boys 22d The 50th moved out this morning to the front.

Spent the day in visiting Friends in the 1st and 14th Regts

One man of Co A killed and three wounded by the axcidental explosion of a shell

Started toward the Tulla hamer this morning raining all day Came up to the enemy at Hoovers Gap had a skirmish nineteen miles from ___ Our Regt on Pickett for the night

Skirmishing and artilery fireing all day relieved from duty in front and went to the rear for rest in evening still raining

Troops passing to the front and forming in Battle line we advanced up the road found the enemy had retreated advanced ten miles

Started again this morning went into Manchester with out oposition about eleven o clock went into camp nice ___ vilage

Relieved and mooved back one mile and went into camp started again in an hour and went into Tullahama without fireing a gun poor place

Went into R this morning.  In evening Marched through Hookers Gap and went into camp

Marched 3 miles and camped for the night

Revilee at 1 AM marched at 3 AM Marched untill 8 ½ AM when Cos F and D were Deflaged as skirmishers at advanced about 3 miles when we met the Reb skirmishers and exchanged compliments with them untill dark with drew at 9 PM Marched all night camp  near Ringold at daylight

Feb 26th
Remained in camp untill 12 M left camp and Marched to Tunnel Hill and camped till evening Left Tunnel Hill at 10 PM and fell back to near Ringold
 
[December 28]
Feb 27th
Marched into Ringold and went into camp
 
Ringold March 9th Nice camp but heavy Pickett duty
 
[December 29]

Ringold six inches of snow fell last night relieved from picket this morning
