Camp in the Field
Sept 18, 1863
Dear Father
I wrote to Elsie to day, but after I mailed the letter I found that I would have a chance of expressing some money tomorrow and I write you this evening to give the directions as to the distribution of it. You will find a list enclosed of all except $20.00 which Madison Funkhouser wishes you to keep for his wife to be given her when she calls for it. Also $25.00 of James C. Crawford as he wishes you to deposit it with the other $20.00 and send me a certificate of deposit.
I spoke to you in one of my letters about some money that Scotty Johnson got of Crawford, / I think the letter must have been lost He (Crawford) gave Mr Bradford an order on Johnson for the money, but he has never heard whether Bradford got the money. I wish you would please ask Mr B— something about it.
Wm Leslie & John Mitchell have been sending money to Robert Edgar which he invests for them. They wished you to give this money to him and let him dispose of it as he did of that sent before.
I send $200.00 you can invest as you think best.
I did think of buying some more Bonds, but I cannot attend to it my self and I thought I would let you take charge of it. I wish you would put it some place that / I can get it when wanted, that is within a reasonable time after it is wanted. I am not particular about much interest. I would rather have it out without interest in a safe place where it was available, than at interest where I would have to wait a long time on it when wanted.
Those Bonds have not been issued to me yet. Mr Wylie subscribed for them to Jay, Cooke & Co and deposited the money with them. They will be sent by express to you as soon as issued.
I cannot prepay the expressage of this money. You had better charge each person the am't
I will pay the charges on the money if they will take it at Col Jeffers office If it is not paid you had better divide the am't / you pay, take a percentage off all you distribute so that you will not lose besides being troubled with distributing the money.
We are now lying in camp near Cedar M't. not far from the place where Pope was defeated last summer.
I think it is likely that we will have a fight before many days. We have no orders now, but there is no telling how soon they may come.
Please write soon. Do not forget that matter of Crawfords
