Dear Father
I have not heard from home for some time but I thought I would write a little this evening
There has been nothing new or strange transpiring here since I wrote last. We are still guarding the Rail Road. Have not seen any Guerillas yet although we hear of them being seen in the neighborhood very often.
I sent the papers &c that I received in relation / to my being appointed a Recruiting officer, along with my application to be relieved from duty here, up to Gen'l Meade. But I have never heard of them since. I dont think I will be able to get home on that service, as the time is so short for recruiting before the draft is to come off.
I did think of applying for a "Leave of Absence" of ten days but I have about given it up. I cannot get one for about a month yet and by that time we will only have about three months to serve. I think it will hardly pay.
We have had pretty severe / weather since New Years day It rained hard then grew cold and froze up. It has been snowing almost all day to day. the snow is several inches deep now. I would much rather it had not snowed until I got my house built. I am living (or rather staying) in a tent which I borrowed of one of the of the officers.
I am going to commence building tomorrow. I have waited this long to give the men the use of the wagon to get in lumber for themselves. They are now pretty well fixed.
I wish you would mail that diary if you have / not done so already.
The health of the Company is very good now. Have no sickness of any account.
One of my men has reenlisted. he will be at home in a few days. No others seem inclined to enlist.
My love to Mother and the children. Please write soon.
Your affc't Son
