Walter H. Wild to Edward A. Wild, 20 April 186X
Easton Pa. Apr 20th
Sunday Afternoon
Dear Edw
We are all well & in fine spirits awaiting orders in this place with hopes of soon having a brush with some of the rebels. We have met with a grateful reception every where on the route & are gradually sobering down to the stern sense of discipline. The rumors & newspaper accounts which reach us are so unsatisfactory that we live in a world by ourselves as it were. We are quartered in a splendid building on the Fair Grounds here with a prospect for miles & miles of mountainous scenery.
There has been but one desertion since we left New York (a driver) at that city they picked out 30 men & sent back for which we were all sorry. / I think I can stand my hand with any of them for endurance.
This is the first hour that I could call my own since I saw you last & we have just come back from the depot after exchanging our old guns for the new rifle bores. they are beauties & I long to use them we have also just housed 72 boxes of shot & shell & a proportionate quantity of powder in this building We are constantly receiving favors from the citizens & live good at our Hotel. We ought to have a day or two to drill the recruits in. Our new horses work first rate. I expect we shall leave here Tuesday morn there were 200 foot volunteers left from here Saturday morn for Pittsburgh Yrs in haste
