Dear Susan
Edward's health continues as good as ever but he is not so strong as I think he would like to be. He has ridden horseback a great deal lately and can outride me. He remarked after reading your last letter to me that you were no safer, if so safe in the outskirts of a large city like Philadelphia as you would be in the heart of the city. But it is bad enough in any part when the Rebs are around. Our men have just returned from a 4 days raid in the direction of Raleigh. As I have not heard any particulars I cannot tell you any. We keep busy here from morn till night and even midnight. the / hardest work I have to do is to get of E.A. off to bed before morning.
The only thing to hinder our having the Second Regiment of Cold. Vols. full and equipped today is the (red tape) delay at War Dp't, the men are ready & willing. My own health is first rate. Provisions are high and scarce, no great variety but enough to keep off the scurvy and yellow jaundice I think.
With heaps of love to you all I am in some haste Your affec
Brother Walter H.
