Jersey City N.J., May 8, 1878
Dear Mother, I recd your letter last week. I went to Hatties wedding, intending to stay there one week after it, and there walk across the country to Providence, But and stay with you a week or so, & then walk to Boston, But Laura was so lonely after Hatties departure, and we found so many little things to do, that I staid there 2½ weeks, and then had to return to Boston first, intending to [torn] a week and then make a fresh start for Providence afoot. But in Boston I received letters calling me to New Jersey about some of my old matters here; and now I hope to take Providence on my way back to Boston, a week or 10 days from now, and trust I shall find you all well, and relieved from the scourge of Minnies presence. I was aghast at the idea of her being there at this time / I thought she had got her quietus last time, when she was driven off so emphatically. You may depend upon it that none but the most summary measures will be of any use. I am anxious to hear what she has done since her arrival, and what you have done with her. Your letter states that you have not seen her yet. If she be still there when I arrive I may be of use in helping you to get rid of her.
The wedding cake was packed in a box for me to carry to Providence in my pocket, and retained till the last day of my stay at Kingston. But as soon as I decided to start for Boston, the cake was sent to you by mail. Laura was planning to shut up her cottage, and go visiting. I urged her to rent it and stay away; but could not prevail. Ellen sticks to her school, with increasing interest. Walter after 4 days illness, returned to his work in Stevens Mill at Franklin Falls N.H.—I have been trying in his behalf in other quarters, but as yet without avail, so far as heard from. I should like to know how Sue stood the seasickness and [torn] too. I think they would both suffer.—My [torn] to all, and I hope the boys will make something by their good early start this spring in farming.
If you write within 3 days or so, please address care of Amos G. Hull—21. Park Row. Room 36.—N.Y If to Boston, care of Ed. Atkinson, he has changed his address to No. 131. Devonshire St. Room 15.
