Port Arthur, Ontario, Can.—May 14, 1890.
Dear Mary,
I have heard often of and from you through Ellen lately who forwards me some of your letters to her. Among other things I notice that Elsies matter of the inheritance and mortgage, has been arranged by her going with you and seeing Mr Gibbs. I trust that the settlement is now all complete and satisfactory; but I have not yet heard a word from Mr. G., nor directly from your house. My love to all in said house.
Now for the important theme of my letter. I have been for some little time past concerned about the health of May Bullock. Ellen wrote describing her ill appearance, and quoted also expressions from other sources, explanations of her illness, its causes, her treatment, &c. &c &c.—all vague enough—but none encouraging in reality. Lately she was in the hands of a specialist. Now I dread drugs as you well know. And I dread a specialist in general, for the throat, at any rate, especially if he be Allopathist, or a Homoeo. low dilutionist. But thank Heaven, a new course of treatment is now open, where all can meet on common ground, if they only meet. and which George B. cannot object to, by reason of any previous prejudices. I refer to the treatment discovered by Dr. A. Wilford Hall of Philadelphia. I had been looking into it lately, and finding the results to be genuine, I signed and witnessed a pledge, like the enclosed, sent it on, and received the 'Health Pamphlet'. It is quite different from what I had previously surmised. In fact, I found it was fixed upon an idea which father had struck upon spontaneously, forty-odd years back and acted upon largely—but never carried out boldly to its logical results in their full extent. I can see now how near father came to a grand [faded] /
But just about that epoch Homoeopathy was in its infancy, and father, as one of the pioneers, grew more & more absorbed in that line of thought, for it required deep & constant study. And but for that, he would doubtless have gone as far as Dr. Hall in this present conception. Now I want you to commence on this treatment at once—and by your example induce May to do likewise, as soon as she sees how simple & feasible it is, and how you improve under it, & as soon as George B. is convinced that it is not Homoeopath and not quackery, and not an invention of the Evil One, and not even an interference with any existing treatment, if it be thought necessary to have other treatment, Homoeop or Allop. But in fact, I think that, quite soon after beginning on this, May would drop her Specialist as a superfluity and a nuisance. Dr Hall is no charlatan. On the contrary he is a man of unusually sound penetrating mind, & profoundly philosophical and scientific. Now I will tell you what to do and May can do the same for as you see by the enclosed Pledge, I am at liberty to practise the treatment not only on my family, but on my patients; and you are my own sister, and my patient too. But as you also see, you are not to publish it to others—and are not to know all the whys and wherefores yourself. If you or May are anxious to know just how this treatment works just so, and especially how it can operate as a preventive against consumption and a host of other diseases, then you or May must sign the Pledge and send the 4.00 with it to Dr Hall, at the address given. You are to get a good syringe (unless you have one already) and the bulb syringe to squeese will do very well, although I should prefer the fountain syringe which hangs up against the wall, and as high up as possible. This is to be used at first daily; say every evening, with great quantities of very warm water. Begin with a quart, if you can, or a pint and a half. / and increase the quantity daily, by a ½ pint if possible at a time, until you can get in one gallon at one operation!! And it can do no harm but on the contrary, much good. Do not be alarmed at some griping pains. But the water must be warmer than the body so as to feel hot. If it be cool, or only tepid, it will cause severe griping. Whatever the quantity you may use, keep it in as long as possible, and work it around in the bowels, by kneading the bowels gently with your hands, especially on the sides right and left, and also by rolling over gently from side to side. Then when you have held it in as long as you can, or long enough, discharge the whole of it at once. But you cannot get it all in at once, that is, all in one steady stream. You must coax it in; for the water will meet with some resistance, and then you must wait a few seconds, or a minute, or 2, or longer whilst you knead the bowels a little on the left side pressing or working it upwards toward the ribs. Then try again as soon as pain or resistance clears & work in a little more water; and more, until your allowance for the day be all taken in, little by little. A good method is, to lie at first flat on the back, with the knees drawn up, and be utterly tranquil in body and mind, and in that position to take in the water; for that causes the least possible resistance to the ingress of the water. Then after getting in a quart, or 2 quarts, to roll gently over till you lie on your right side and stay there awhile; giving the water, (which has been passing up along the left side of the bowels) a chance to flow across the pit of the stomach, and down to and along the right side of the bowels, down to the right groin. Then, either in that position, or by turning gently onto your back again, take in another quart, and another; Until the work of the day be wholly accomplished. And the handiest time for it, is at bedtime; for then you are not hurried; and can go directly to sleep after it is / all over, and sleep well. This is to be done daily at first until you get the hang of it—and continue daily according to the need of the individual cue: For yourself perhaps a week, for May 2 or 3 weeks or very possibly longer. After that, continue the same thing every second day for perhaps 3 months. And after that, every third day forever and ever, and if you can continue it every 3rd day for 100 years, then you will assuredly live 100 years longer. And there may be more truth than poetry in this last statement if the thing be faithfully carried out. For the potency of it is not only to remove, and wash out, any existing disease, but to prevent, ward off, and resist the entrance of future disease, even contagious and epidemic diseases!! How it does it, the pamphlet must tell you, not I. No medicine whatever is to be taken, in nor out; unless sometimes you may desire to put a little soap in the water for special purposes, in a purgative way, but rarely. All very simple, as you see—no expense whatever (except a good syringe as fast as you wear out an old one) except the initial 4.00; and not that, in your case, if you follow my directions, trusting blindly. Likewise May. And the effects of thus driving out disease, and keeping it out, are not simply health, but elasticity, vigor, never experienced before, and activity, and appetite, and gain of flesh, hard solid flesh and muscle, in place of mere fat which it removes. And the effect of all these is longevity = an enjoyable longevity!!! It is worth a little daily trouble to gain all these.
You remember last year, I wrote you to take Tart. Emetic. of 30th potency and how it benefited you and Sue, for the cough & expectoration. Another good medicine for the same object is Sticta Pulmonalis of 30th potency. Bear them in mind, in case of future need. But under Halls Treatment, such need could hardly ever arise. I am going to write to Sue just like this letter, for herself, "and her often infirmities". Your brother E.A.W.

N.B.—In case there be anything the matter with the kidneys, proceed as follows: do just what is above detailed, and when it is over and the water all discharged, then get into bed, and inject another pint (or 1½ pints) of water; and keep still, do not move, but go to sleep: and that last pint will all be carried off and discharged through the kidneys thus washing out the kidneys, so to speak. Repeat this daily while kidneys be troubled.
