Walter S. Burges to Unknown, 2 October 1861
Prov Oct 2 1861—

Dear Sir,                      I recd yr favor of 27th ult. I notice all you say about the boy Nelligan and I agree fully that it is altogether best for the boy himself that he should remain with you. But it is of no use. I saw Col Brown as you suggested that he wd be here & altho' he seemed to prefer the regular course of a Habeas Corpus, still I am satisfied that with the Gov's approval he would send him home, especially as I have recd $15 from his friends to repay the bounty & as much now to pay for his uniform

When I spoke to the Gov he kindly said "You tell them / that I approve". I was then a little fearful to ask you to rely upon hearsay, & when I saw the Col. he expressed a decided preference that his approval shd be written—since which time, my engagements with the Grand Jury have prevented my seeing the Gov. I expect to get his approval & forward it, perhaps with this, & perhaps in another communication soon to follow.

Yours Truly
N S Burges /

P.S. the Grand Jury have found a Bill vs William and Isaiah Aylesworth for stealing that old Seine—

I understand that Wm is here and that Isaiah & a 3d Brother are with you. Is that so? I think it must be so.
