Charles C. Hardwick
Charles C. Hardwick was born on January 14, 1837, in Hancock County, Georgia, to Richard and Martha Hardwick. His father was a farmer, merchant, and factor who owned $6,000 of personal property in 1860. Hardwick grew up and attended school in Hancock County, Georgia. By 1860, he and his father were living in Savannah, Georgia, and he was also working as a merchant and factor. He enlisted in the Confederate army on May 21, 1861, and mustered in as a 2nd lieutenant in Company B of the 8th Georgia Infantry. He was promoted to captain on December 20, 1862, and by November 1864, he was serving as assistant adjutant general under General George T. Anderson. He surrendered as part of General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
 
Hardwick returned to Georgia after the war, and he married Ann F. Johnson on January 24, 1867. He continued working as a merchant in Savannah, and in 1870, he owned $10,000 of real estate and $10,000 of personal property. Ann died sometime before 1880, and he followed on March 7, 1891.
