David Alfred Holmes was born around 1843 in Connecticut. The family eventually moved to Providence, Rhode Island. He enrolled at Brown University in 1860, but he left to join the army during the Civil War.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 20, 1861, and he mustered in as a corporal in Battery A of the 3rd Rhode Island Heavy Artillery. In March 1863, he was promoted to 1st lieutenant in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Gettysburg, and he resigned on August 18, 1863.
He settled in Illinois after the war, and he married Mary C. Allen on May 17, 1871. Their daughter Edith was born around 1874. They lived in Boston, Massachusetts, and he worked as a postal clerk. He applied for a federal pension in July 1898 and eventually received one. They moved to Deerfield, Illinois, in the late 1800s, and he worked as a bank clerk and served as a notary public. He died on September 16, 1912, in Highland Park, Illinois.
