Abel S. Hinds
Abel S. Hinds was born on November 5, 1832, in Eden, Vermont, to Abel S. Hinds and Maria Harrington. His father was a joiner and carpenter who owned $200 of real estate in 1850. Hinds grew up and attended school in Eden before beginning work as a carpenter and farmer. He married Emily D. Stone in Wolcott, Vermont, on September 12, 1859, and their daughter Jennie was born around 1863. By 1860, the couple owned $1,000 of real estate and $356 of personal property. He enlisted in the Union army on September 14, 1863, and mustered in as a private in Company M of the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery on October 7. He died during the Siege of Petersburg on June 21, 1864.
