Nicholson Broughton Proctor was born around 1789 in Marblehead, Massachusetts, to Joseph and Ann Proctor. He married Lucy Bond on July 1, 1809, and they had at least ten children: Nicholson, born around 1811; William, born around 1813; Henry, born around 1814; Joseph, born on May 7, 1816; Lucy, born around 1818; John, born around 1819; John, born around 1821; Albert and Alfred, who were both born on November 30, 1822; and Moses, born around 1825. At least five of their children died in childhood, and his wife died on May 5, 1837.
He married Mary E. Hiler on September 23, 1839. They lived in Marlborough, Massachusetts, and he earned a living as a trader. By 1850, he owned $5,000 of real estate. According to an early biographer, he “was engaged there [in Marlborough] for many years in carriage building, and he also kept a general store. He was a citizen of integrity and high repute.” By 1860, he was living in his son Joseph’s household in Somerville, Massachusetts. He died of endocarditis in Boston on January 31, 1866.
