Charles Leaman to Mary E. Leaman, 30 January 1863
M. Barricks Washington Jan. 30.63
Sis
I received your letter day before yesterday, and one from Jack the day before. It is now after eleven Oclock and as fine a day overhead as you would wish to see, but the ground is covered with snow haveing snowed the whole of wednesday and all that night. in the morning there was about a foot of snow on the ground, but it is going away very fast. I did not see a sleigh out the whole time if the same snow was up there, there would of been first rate sleighing. Jack writes that he is well and that they got paid off last saturday. Yesterday I was on liberty yesterday and met John Lindsay he is in the Hospital here. He is in the Regt. with Jack, but does not know any thing about them for he has not been with them / for some time. I am glad to hear that the prisoners of the Dragoons are safe. If they have not a very pleasant place to stay they will get enough to eat and will have some liberty. The Anderson Troop have been treated very badly but I do not think the most of them where right in doing what they did, when their Sen. asked them to wait, I think they should have done it, and fought like men, like the others done. I see by the star that Palmer has been made Colonel and has gone to take command. when he gets there I hope he may organize them and put them in good order. Tell Rosh that I was glad to see he could wright so well, that I could make out every word, and that he must go to school every day for he is learning so fast. I will now close by sending much love to all.
Charlie.
