Charles Leaman to Mary E. Leaman, 16 March 1863
M. Barracks Washington March 16th

Sis
I received your letter, dated the twelvth last saturday evening and I was very sorry to hear that Mr Lefever is so very bad. It is now about nine Oclock in the morning and the ground is covered about two or three inches with snow having fallen last evening with some very heavy. [faded] it is snowing a little but nothing of any account. There is the strangest weather [faded] that one day is clear and pleasant and before twenty four hrs is around we have rain snow, hail, thunder and lightning. If is that way down where the Army of the Potomac is, I do not wonder at so many of them geting sick. I was on liberty last fryday and was agreably surprised by meeting Lieut. G. Eckert in  Penna Ave He looks as well as ever I saw him and says that all the rest of them are well. I allso seen / Mr Hersh who looks the same as when he left Paradise. I see him prety frequently as he is all ways the same place in the Capitol. Every thing is going on the same here as before, it is reported here that a squad of recruits is comeing on to night from philadelphia. It is reported here in the papers that fort Donelson was taken again but I hope it is not so I see by the sundy paper yesterday that the Rebels are in a flurishing condishion for they have only to pay eighty dollars for a coat, thirty for a pair of boots, and a green back is worth over two dollars of confed, which shows I think that they are geting along first rate and will be able to stand it longer than we will when Europe will give us one hundred millions of gold if we want it but thank heaven I do not think we do. I still continue well and do not think I ever felt better. as the mail will soon go out I will now close by sending much love to all.

Charley.
