Charles Leaman to Mary E. Leaman, 26 February 1863
M. Barracks Washington Feb. 26th/63
Sis
I received your letter of the 20th on last monday. From what you wrote then, I suppose Hary is about comeing down stairs and I hope he may be able to stay down. The weather here is very changeable, the snow that fell on last sunday is to day being toped out with rain, so you can imagine the roads we will have here. yesterday I was out in town and the track is covered with mud and water. Last saturday two companies of us was taken from the navy yard and here where marched in full uniform to the funeral of Commander Woodhull. he was taken to the Congressional burring ground and placed in a vault and after the services where over, we fired / three rounds of blank cartriges over the vault and marched back again to the Barracks we started at eleven and got back at quarter after three. We seen nothing but the coffin which was covered with a flag and there lay on it a wreath, his hat and sword, his hat and sword where taken out again. the coffin was carried by six of us. I would have liked it first very well but the mud some places was over shoe top. I seen in the Lancaster Intelligencer that Ser. Murphy got from home that Isaac Hiester was married and allso John Esbenshade, but I did not know wether it was our John or not. Mr Linville, when he was here the other day, said he saw Brainerd on the St. but could not get to speak to him. I told him I thought he must be mistaken, but he seamed to be certain. I thought it might be Cott Gundt. If Cott is here anywhere let me know and I will hunt him up. As it is near inspection I will close with much love to all.
Charley.
