Charles Leaman to Mary E. Leaman, 26 May 1863
Washington May 26th 63
Sis.
I received your letter yesterday. I was sorry to hear that Jack returned home so ill, but I hope by the time this reaches you he may have entirely recovered from his exhaustion. I was glad to see that the 122nd was met with such a harty welcome. It was truly a pity that they could not get home in the day time, but I think it showed to the boys the earnest desire of their friends to welcom them and allso the desire of the copperheads to destroy their pleasure. The express says that these men are known, and I should like to hear of a draft catching them. I think it would take their breath, and stop their / hissing effectual. I forgot to tell you before that Sanderson has a son here, he is a man of about thirty I think, and man of a very good mind, but he is a compleet wreck now, with wiskey, the most he does here is clerk for the Ord. Sergeant. about his oppions on the war I know nothing about, but I have no reason to believe that he is any way blackend. I believe they took a bijak home last Fryday and as I did not get out untill Saturday, I did not get to see him since I wrote to you. Every thing is going on as usual here. Yesterday and to day there has been a compleet change in the weather, it has become quite cool which makes it just pleasant. I will now close remember me to all inquireing friends, and much love to all.
Charley.
