In Barracks Chastown Mass.
July 12th 1865
With considerable delay but without accident I reached this yesterday morning.
Coming in to Phila I met Bob Laverty and Levi Ellmaker. I had to remain there untill Sabbath Eve, was with Harry all day. He has very fine qtrs, and he seemes very well pleased with every thing but is tired having nothing to do. I reached N.York Sabbath evening at ten O'clock. I made myself easy for the night
Starting at eight Monday morning without stoping or scarcely an accident we reached Boston at 5 O'clock. Coming in to Trenton we had what might have been a serious affair if it would have have happened at any other time than when we where stopping, caused by the breaking of a truck of one of the passenger cars. No harm was done any more than they got a considerable jarring.
I did not come into Barracks untill the next morning Tuesday and was not any disappointed in the appearance of the place which will likely be my home for some time. It was always represented to me as a splendid Barracks and it certainly is. I judge it cannot be beat in the States. Every thing is comfortable clean and handy and Major / McCawley I hear is not the Old Capt. but a better man. So so far I am very well pleased. I have not done my duty yet but have been, ever since I arrived cleaning up &c, getting ready for duty. I have just finished marking my close and I am beginning to feel quite at home. It is a little inconvenient however to come under the Barrack rule again but it is not quite so strange or unpleasant as my first experiance in it. I have seen scarcely any of the city yet, but it is very clean and very irregular layed out and as I have heard, very hard to travel in. For the first time in two years I write you on a table that is some change for the better. I occasionally yet enjoy a bite of cake. I will most likely not trouble you with so long letters as usual, short as they were and I dare say not so frequently either. As this is the product of a certain quantity of pork & beans just finished, it will be unnecessary to ask any excuse for the above.
